Dyers Building Conversion – Batheaston
A modern extension with classic lines to complement a traditional stone building in Batheaston, Bath.

Design: Nicki Turner
Status: Completed 2009

Brief: To convert and extend an old stone cloth dyers building for use as additional accommodation.

Summary: Style and design were an all important part of this project with the extension providing a modern complement to the original stone structure. Working from just an outline design, Greenheart first finalised the technical design and specification before starting on construction. By setting the foundations back under the extension, we managed to create an impression that the building was floating. Smooth lines were achieved by bringing the gutters and waterproofing that would normally sit outside the roof, inside the roof. The result is a simple timber clad box with no external clutter.

Inbuilt efficiency: The original stone shed was repaired using traditional techniques and materials, lime and green oak, and then insulated internally isover (recycled plastic) to improve warmth and efficiency.
