Foresters Cottage – Forest of Dean
White Design
Brief: To refurbish the existing cottage & provide link to new extension
The main thrust of the work was to enable the owner wheelchair access to the whole ground floor plus access to the outside via expansive garden deck.
The extension mirrors the existing cottage from the front but sits off the ground to the rear with a more contemporary design.
Timber frame construction with walls/floor/roof being insulated with Warmcel.
All structural timber to roof & goalpost frame in Douglas Fir. Velfac windows & doors. Front elevation in lime render with the side & rear clad in Cedar. Roof in natural slate & single ply membrane. Internally floors in slate & oak. Heating via wood stove.
The existing cottage had all the external walls insulated & replastered. New high-performance sash windows were fitted. Existing downstairs bathroom was made into a level access ensuite wet room.
The cottage now benefits from solar panels for its hot water & has just achieved a Gold star from the Welsh tourist Board
