Garden Studio – Long Ashton, Bristol
A stylish, energy-efficient, open-plan workspace, extending above garages in Cotham, Bristol.

Design: Natural Design
Status: Completed 2009

Brief: To create an energy efficient open workspace above an existing row or garages.

Summary:Greenheart extended the block and beam floor to accommodate the new footprint. We used a timber framed construction, 250mm deep. The external rain screen walls to the road were built in brick to match the existing fascia. Diffutherm boards were used for the walls to the garden side, fixed and coated with lime based render. A beautiful barrel roof was constructed using three structural Glulams. A Cefil single ply membrane was used to waterproof the roof. We finished the interior with an Ash staircase to match the floor and ceiling. Douglas Fir was used for the sliding doors, garden door and main entrance door.

Inbuilt efficiency: The timber frame construction was sheathed in Bitroc, which has excellent thermal conductivity, and insulated with Steico hemp, a wood fibre insulation board sourced solely from sustainable cultivated forests. The walls and roof were insulated with Warmcel, manufactured from 100% recycled newspaper, capturing carbon which would otherwise be released as methane at landfill. High performance Vrogrum porthole windows were fitted. A bespoke wood burning stove was installed in the studio space. Monodraught light tubes, which carry daylight down into the room below, were used in the main space, over the stairs and in the bathroom to maximize the use of natural light.
