Slad Road - Stroud
A low-energy family home in Stroud, Gloucestershire.
Design: David Austin Architects
Status: Under construction,
Brief: A new family home providing a zero bills live and work space and utilising a steep, south-facing plot.
Summary: This timber framed building required a large retaining wall before construction could start in 2010. As it nears completion it’s exciting to see a beautiful, energy efficient family home emerge from a challenging and inaccessible space.
Inbuilt efficiency: We used a highly energy-efficient, stick-built on site, 300mm twin wall timber frame. Gluelam beams are used to achieve open plan living spaces and all insulation is ‘Warmcel’ recycled newspaper. The building is externally clad with cedar boards, with the roof part zinc and part single ply with turf. All heating and hot water is supplied by solar thermal panels and a log gasification boiler. Triple glazing and a south facing aspect provide plenty of passive solar gain to complete the package. The project is due for completion in 2011.
