Self build houses, St Werburghs – Bristol
The development of a brown field site into thirty sustainably built homes in St Werburghs, Bristol.

Design: Various
Status: Completed 2002-2005

Brief: To provide support for a team of self-builders working to convert a brownfield site to thirty sustainable built homes.

Summary: This brown field site was divided into thirty plots for self build with a broad sustainable building criteria. All structures were lightweight and built on an existing reinforced concrete slab. With each self-builder choosing to do as little or as much of the work as they were able, according to their skills, available time and finance, Greenheart acted as a supportive design and build partner. We provided practical and design help to many of the team, built three of the houses and fitted a passive solar conservatory to another.

Inbuilt efficiency: Constructed using timber frame, built on site, thermal efficiency was achieved using Bitroc structural sheathing and Warmcell insulation. For the windows we used a combination of Rational Scandinavian pre-finished timber and locally made Douglas fir. External finishes were western red cedar boarding and lime render on Heraklith board, a compound of wood wool, magnesite and bonding additives, widely used for thermal and noise insulation.
